Michael Patrick Murphy’s Rules on Shopping
Most people follow their emotions 9.9 times out of 10. This is most evident when it comes to shopping. They spend money they don’t have by using credit. They buy things at retail while their medical situations, college educations and other primary concerns are underfunded. Unless you have a million dollars in the bank with 33 percent of that in gold and silver, you have no business paying retail prices for anything, I don’t care what kind of salary you’re pulling down.
  • Always support your most local economy first. Keep the money in your neighborhood.
  • Shopping for a suit? Try JC Penny’s when there is a sale. Brook’s Bros, should be off the 99.9 percent’s radar.
  • Never buy a new car. Always shop for 2 to 4 year old quality vehicles and keep $2,000 on hand at all times to cover repairs.
  • Better to make less money and spend less than to make more money and spend more. Think income tax rates on this one.
  • If you bought everything that’s on sale these days, you’d still be bankrupt. Shop sales for needed things within your budget.
  • Think health first. Don’t buy things that damage it.
  • Use the Internet from Amazon.com on down for things that are not available in your neighborhood.

Michael’s Rocklin California Example
A few years ago, I discovered that there is only one City of Rocklin on the planet. I started picking up the domain names. Then I started buying discounted furniture, lamps, accessories and other things from retail closeouts and clearance centers. I also shopped garage sales for interesting and unique items. This was all done locally, mostly in Rocklin with a touch from the neighboring City of Roseville. Then I listed the items on Craig’s list and also on the various Rocklin websites I owned. Here’s some sample websites that save Rocklinites tons of money, while knowing that the money they spent primarily was going to Rocklin businesses whenever possible.
